World Ocean Day: Krustagroup is committed to Sustainability

The oceans are a natural resource of vital importance, covering 70% of the planet’s surface, feeding millions of people and accounting for around 80% of the world’s biodiversity.

In June this day is celebrated at Krustagroup. Being aware of how vital it is to conserve this vast resource, we aim for sustainable development in our fishing practices to offer our customers healthy and environmentally friendly seafood.

When is World Ocean Day?

The date of June 8 was marked by the United Nations Assembly (UN) as the date to celebrate World Oceans Day. Since 2008, this has been a date that has served to raise awareness of the importance of the oceans and the responsibility that we humans have over this resource.

And it is that the oceans are a great source of life that sustains all the organisms that inhabit the planet Earth, in addition to having an active role in contributing against global warming, also serving as an energy supply and source of food.

There are many marine species that have become extinct due to poor fishing practices and poor management of highly polluting waste in their waters. For example, it should be noted that at least 8 million tons of plastic end up in the oceans each year, wreaking havoc on fisheries and wildlife. Without ignoring the climate change that is affecting fishing, causing uncontrolled temperatures and representing a threat not only in the present, but also for the future.

World Ocean Day: Activities and Sustainable practises

In honor of World Oceans Day, at Krustagroup we want to do our bit by teaching some practices that all people can do to protect the oceans and guarantee the sustainable supply of fishery products for the future.

  • CHOOSE SUSTAINABLE FOOD

Sustainable seafood has its own characteristics that you have to know how to recognize in order to make a good purchasing choice. One of the main practices to recognize a sustainable seafood product is to look for the blue seal on the packaging. This seal means that these fishing products come from sustainable catches and from companies that comply with requirements and rigorous audits of sustainable practices in their fishing activities. A certification that helps increase consumer confidence in the products they consume and in brands.

  • LEARN ABOUT SUSTAINABLE FISHING

One of the best ways to contribute to the care of the oceans is to learn more about what sustainable fishing is and the activities that are carried out to contribute to fishing that is respectful of the environment and marine ecosystems.

To do this, use the informative materials that Krustagroup makes available to you to continue training and stay up to date.

  • SHARE YOUR KNOWLEDGE

It should be taken into account that today there are more and more customers who are concerned about the origin of the fish food they buy and if it is sustainable. For this reason, it is not only important that as a company you choose to market quality and sustainable products, but it is also vital that you share why. In this way, more people can learn about the importance of choosing sustainable seafood.
